About

Syd Meyer

Filmmaker and campaign strategist. I chase the wind and a passion.

The short answer

Who I am and what I make

I am Syd Meyer. I am a filmmaker and a marketing campaign strategist, and I do both jobs on the same projects. I run SSS Lighthouse Films for the filmmaking and SSS Lighthouse Creative for the campaigns behind it. I make wedding films, event films, adventure films and brand films, and I travel for all four.

My work covers destination weddings anywhere in the world, action sports and expeditions, cultural events, and lifestyle brands. I film in Charleston, the Florida Keys and Minneapolis most often, and internationally whenever the story asks for it.

I am on a mission to bring humanity a little closer through culture, language, and lifestyle stories.

The rule I actually live by

Treat every risk as a chapter

For two years I have made decisions on a single rule: this will be a great story one day. Not logic. Not the safe call. The story.

That one North Star has made most of my decisions for me, and it has made my life more interesting, more inspiring and more meaningful than logic ever would have.

Treating every risk as a chapter has been my saving grace in the darkest stretches. When you cannot see past the present moment, when it is hard and dark and lonely and stressful, being able to zoom out and read it as a chapter instead of an ending is the most useful thing you can do.

I am sure some philosophy got there before me. This is my version. You can keep your sanity and outlast almost anyone if you treat the whole journey as one long story worth telling.

And that is exactly why I can tell yours. I am not observing a story from the outside. I live inside one. I see it as it happens, I see it as it evolves, and I can usually see where it is going.

Why I collect languages

Every language is a storytelling system

I speak four languages. That did not come from wanting a skill on a list. It came from being curious about the barrier that sits between people, and wanting to get through it.

Because every language is storytelling. You put words next to each other and, depending on the culture, the tone and the tongue, they mean something entirely different. Learning a language is learning how a whole group of people decided to build meaning.

That is the same job as filmmaking. Put two images next to each other and watch what they come to mean. I am on a mission to bring humanity a little closer through culture, language and lifestyle stories, and those three are not a list. They are the same thing looked at from different angles.

What that means for your film

Truth as a strategy

Helping people and brands tell the real truth about who they are is the heartbeat of my work. Not the polished version. The true one, which is almost always the more interesting one anyway.

That belief runs both halves of what I do. Through SSS Lighthouse Creative I work out who the film is for, what it has to make them feel and where it runs. Through SSS Lighthouse Films I shoot it.

Truth as a strategy. Creatively and personally.

How that shows up

  • Positioning and message before a single frame is shot
  • A film built for a specific audience and a specific place to live
  • Cutdowns, verticals and stills planned into the shoot, not salvaged after it
  • A story that keeps working once the film is delivered

How I got here

I had to start somewhere

Nobody hands you a camera and a reason to use it. Mine arrived sideways, through a construction company and a drone.

2022

A drone, and a skill I did not know I had

A marketing internship for a construction company put a drone in my hands to capture roofs. That was the beginning.

2023

Guiding Light Drones, my first business

It did not take long to realise I wanted to do more than fly drones. I wanted to be a filmmaker. But first I had to learn how to use a camera.

2024

I dropped out of college and moved to South Carolina

Two priorities: understand everything I could about video, and learn how to kiteboard. Both turned out to be the same education.

2025

Chasing stories around the globe

El Gouna in Egypt, Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, Cabo Verde, Charleston, the Florida Keys, and Raleigh. I carry home with me wherever I go.

2026

Sat down, and got back up

A faulty ACL and meniscus reconstruction from 2022 caught up with me. Two invasive knee surgeries back to back, and a year spent learning to get my stride back.

I believe in dreams

But first, we have to believe in ourselves.
